Whats On

Oskar's Drum / Drahla / Mick Shepherd

Friday, 17 March 2017 - 8:00pm

Oskar’s Drum

Oskar’s Drum, named after the main character in Günter Grass’s famous novel The Tin Drum are an exciting ‘art beat happening’ featuring esteemed Manchester-based musicians, Patrick Fitzgerald (vocals/guitar in Kitchens of Distinction) and Yves Altana (Chameleons Vox, Wonky Alice, The Chrysalids).

While Patrick’s not exactly been musically idle since seminal shoegazers Kicthens of Distinction split in 1996 – not least, pursing a 5 album solo career under another literary pseudonym ‘Stephen Hero’ -  Oskar’s Drum feels like a new departure, ignited by the whiff of cordite obtained from collaborating with Yves, a standout player from the Manchester indie scene, currently also performing with Mark Burgess in Chameleons Vox.

Oskar’s Drum’s debut album ‘A Cathedral of Hands’ was released last November, well-received by the acolytes who loved hearing Patrick’s trademark soaring vocals  matched with sinewy guitar lines that channelled  Magazine, the Banshees, Bowie and Scott Walker as well as a big chunk of K.O.D.  Anyone who likes intelligent left field pop delivered with melody, tunes and great lyrics should love Oskar’s Drum.

“Patrick’s voice still sounds really, really good and the whole album has such a timeless feel about it” Gideon Coe BBC 6 Music

“The welcome return of Patrick Fitzgerald from Kitchens Of Distinction. Gorgeous heartfelt songs that swoop and soar. Lovely stuff!” Piccadilly Records

On the night Patrick and Yves will have live accompaniment from multi-instrumentalist Danny Ashberry.  Thus far Oskar’s Drum have only played a couple of showcase gigs in Manchester and London, but the reports have been of a breathtakingly-good set, so we’re really pleased to have secured a Preston show from them.  Don’t miss it!

Listen to lead track from the album, ‘Blackouts’:

Drahla

We’re delighted to have arranged another date with Drahla after they had to pull out of the recent Rose McDowall show due to illness. We like them a lot, so we were really keen to set up a replacement gig and it will be great to still host their first visit to Preston.

Drahla are a great new band from North Yorkshire, channelling Pixies, Giant Drag and Life Without Buildings. Their first digital single 'Fictional Decision' was produced by MJ of Hookworms and is a refreshing blast of moody post punk with a mesmering and intriguing vocal performance from singer/bassist Luciel Brown that you will want to play again and again.

Mick Shepherd

Former Big Red Bus singer and songwriter Mick Shepherd has been writing and performing new material that can be best described as an indie folk hybrid.  Inspired by the likes of Damien Jurado, Tallest Man on Earth and Nick Drake, Mick's songs also betray his lifelong affection for indie greats such as The Go Betweens and Teenage Fanclub. His mix of jangly acoustic guitars, plaintive vocal melodies and emotive lyrics combine to create a compelling sound.

Tickets for this great show are just £5 advance or £7 on the door.
