The North West Way: Steve Garrill Talk

Sunday, 16 July 2017 - 7:00pm

Steve Garrill first got into walking when he realised that his job was adversely affecting his health. After completing the Dales Way he got the bug and completed all of the long distance walks in the north of England. Inspired by these experiences he went on to pioneer a new long distance route that goes from Preston Railway Station all the way to Carlisle Railway Station, a 13 day walk of some 205 miles which takes in some of the best landscape the north of England has to offer:

Steve  will  talk  about  his inspiration for the walk and describe it with photos of the route and touch upon some of the local history which is included in the book. After an interval hewill in the second half talk about the positive aspects following on from a serious life threatening road traffic accident he suffered less than two years ago. This will include his work as a volunteer Countryside Ranger maintaining the Ribble Way, which forms the first two days of the North West Way, and his commitment to working with young people undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The upland areas of the North of England are a joy to walk. Using a combination of recognised long distance paths the route from Preston to Carlisle links the two rail stations and along the way passing through the most scenic and inspiring sections of these walks.
